The Rev. Donald M. Smith, Bishop’s Vicar

our new spiritual leader

The Rev. Don Smith will soon take over the role as our New Spiritual Leader at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, Memphis.  Don, his wife Lloyd Early Smith and two lovely daughters are in the difficult process of moving from Austin, Texas, where Don graduated just days ago from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest.

Both Don and Lloyd graduated from Ole Miss in 1991 and Don quickly moved into positions at banking and mortgage institutions in Memphis.  He worked for several years at the Data Co. as Vice President of Operations and also for two years at Marquis Spas as a Division Director of Operations.  He appeared to be well suited for a long and successful career in the business world.

In 2001, his ambitions took a marked “spiritual turn”.  He accepted a position at Saint John’s Episcopal Church as Director of Christian Education and Spiritual Formation.  For the next four years he directed all Christian educational aspects in the 1100 member parish.  As Director of Children’s Sunday School to Adult Sunday School, he wrote and implemented annual curriculum.  He implemented and designed various programs for a variety of groups there as well as coordinating a number of parish wide events.  He also authored articles for the Diocesan News on Christian Education and Central American mission.

In 2004, Don entered the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, where he graduated on May 15 with a Master of Divinity degree.  He attended the seminary with the blessings and assistance of The Diocese of West Tennessee.  While there he was the recipient of several major scholarships.  During his middle and senior years he had “field placement” at Saint Richard’s in Round Rock, Texas, where he served three services each Sunday and preached periodically.  He was the recipient of the Seminary Consultation on Mission Award for study in Africa and co-lead a mission trip of 20 doctors and nurses there in 2006.

Don coordinated several seminary-wide functions and was chosen twice to represent the seminary at the Episcopal Theological Seminary Leadership Conferences at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry in Ambridge, Pennsylvania and the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas.  During his time at seminary he managed to hold regular “work-study” positions and serve as Student Body Representative.

Come join all of us as we welcome our new Vicar and his family at a Welcome Breakfast between services on June 3.

Marty Bullard
Senior Warden
